Dear friends, today we received some worried emails asking us whether we survived the earthquake. So we decided to send out a general letter to all of you. Here in Jaén - in the north of Peru - we didn't notice anything. Of course we heard the terrible news in the media (more than 40 casualties!), but here the earth didn't quake. As we understand the center was in front of the south coast of Peru so that mainly the coastal regions were affected. There the "costa" is relatively narrow so that the pretty intense earthquake also affected the upper Andes, e.g. the beautiful city of Arequipa. Gaizko - a colleague of us here in Radio Marañón - is in Arequipa at the moment and called this morning to tell us that he is fine. He didn't feel very much there either. Probably because Arequipa is already pretty high up in the Andes (2350m > sea level). So, don't worry about us, but rather about the poor peruvians in the south. But yesterday we received good news: Finally Vladimir Montesinos - the corrupt ex-chief of the secret service and buddy of ex-president Fujimori - was arrested in Venezuela. They have been looking for him for more than half a year. And this is even more curious since the President of Venezuela used to be a very good friend of Montesinos. Practically no one here in Peru thought that he would ever be prosecuted. So you can imagine how the peruvians feel right now. The earthquake is pretty unimportant in comparison!
Heidis dad sent us this foto from Arequipa and Tacna. He also sent us two german(!) newspaper clippings of the Süddeutsche Zeitung from Munich: about the earthquake and the capture of Montesinos And we found another (german) article from the SpiegEl Verlag about the earthquake.
Thanks for your concerns. Abrazos and hugs,
